This just in from Matt Rexroad over at the Andy Pugno for Assembly campaign. My loooongtime friend Andy (we go back to our College Republican days together) is the front-runner in the GOP primary in the 5th Assembly District (where Roger Niello is termed out) in the Sacramento area. It is an interesting memo from Pugno’s pollster, the respected Gary Lawrence… The significant an important message in this memo is that Pugno is well ahead of any of the Democrats whom he may face this November…

RE: Survey Results
DATE: April 27, 2010
We are submitting to you today the results of the survey we conducted for you in California’s 5th Assembly District where we sampled the opinions of 400 high probability voters through telephone interviews April 7-12.
By way of a few highlights, you are leading the field in the Republican primary, but more importantly it’s your lead over each of the four Democrats in the general election that shows that the 5th district is solidly Republican and that you are well positioned to win.
Before we asked the traditional vote questions, we measured the underlying set of attitudes among those most likely to vote in November. These reveal the reasons why you have 20-point leads over your Democratic opponents:
Would you vote for a candidate who is conservative or liberal on social issues?
Conservative 58
Liberal 32
No Opinion 10
If the election for a new State Assembly Member were held today, would you vote for the candidate who favors more government involvement or less government involved in economic matters?
More government involvement 18
Less government involvement 76
No opinion 6
Would you vote for the candidate who …
Wants to cut state services to balance the state budget 58
Wants to raise taxes to balance the state budget 28
No opinion 14
This mood of the electorate in the 5th district mirrors what we are seeing throughout America. The dissatisfaction with the progressive ideas of the present administration also shows up as some Democrats even opt for a Peace and Freedom candidate. You would still have a lead even if no P&F candidate were on the ballot, but because votes for Martinez come directly at the expense
of the Democratic candidate, your lead is even stronger:
Pugno 46
Pan 28
Martinez 10
Pugno 47
Miles 23
Martinez 10
Pugno 46
Shelby 27
Martinez 8
Pugno 42
Gray 27
Martinez 10
