I’ve had more than a few contacts over the passage of AB 606 that would allow the creation of a California Blueberry Commission. I’ve been asked why can’t all the stuff they are proposed to do be done by a private association, like the current California Blueberry Association (and sponsor of the bill)?
First, I love blueberries from California. I have strayed occasionally and eaten them from other states. Maine’s are particularly good and the do have a commission as does Oregon and Michigan other tempters of my palate.
Blueberries are great morning, noon or night. There are blueberry jams, blueberry pies, blueberry pancakes, blueberry waffles, blueberry syrups, blueberry salsas, blueberry cobblers, blueberry donuts, blueberry salad dressings, blueberry muffins, blueberry shakes, blueberry smoothies, blueberry juices, blueberry cheesecakes, blueberry cream cheese, blueberry ‘n eggs, just regular fresh blueberries, frozen blueberries, blueberry butter…butter.
Anyways back to the commission.
A private association can do marketing and promotion, but they can’t do this very important function. Tax blueberries to pay for it.
This how the tax and commission would be enacted. The commission becomes operational if 65% of blueberry producers and handlers vote for it. At least 40% of those eligible to vote must take part in the tax or not to tax election. Then there is a referendum on the tax every five years. (I wish we could get that on the car tax or sales tax) The tax can’t exceed $.025 a pound. Handlers and producers will pay the tax and probably pass it on to me.
Even if you want out and think the commission isn’t helping your blueberry marketing, there is no escaping the blueberry tax once imposed.
Many of the other commodity commissions have the same structure.
And yes this new agency will have the power to prosecute civil violations.
Now without this commission blueberry production has gone up. Partially due to the demand I personally created. I just hope that government doesn’t get in the way of a growing and tasty market.
Where’s that blueberry butter before it’s taxed???
