It was mention elsewhere in the blogosphere already, but this morning I was able to confirm that the arrival of Pat Clarey and Rob Stutzman to the payroll of the California Republican Party is a done deal.
Republican Clarey, who had been serving as Governor Schwarzenegger’s Chief of Staff until the end of last year, was replaced in that position by Democrat Public Utilities Commissioner Susan Kennedy. Stutzman had been serving as Arnold’s Communications Director, and he has been replaced inside of the administration by another stalwart GOPer, Adam Mendelsohn.
It is not unusual for these kinds of staff hires to take place at the GOP. I know from my perspective as having served as Executive Director that having folks who are working on fundraising or grassroots activities that will have mutual benefit to candidates and the GOP often are on the payroll.
These kinds of hires are made much easier because Governor Schwarzenegger received a pre-primary endorsement from the State GOP last year

They don’t come any better than Stutz, he is one of the best communicators in the state. Huge benefit to the GOP and the candidates.

I’m the guy who “mentioned” this story Thursday morning in my LA Weekly online column, http://www.newwestnotes.com/, and Friday morning in the Capitol Morning Report. It’s an interesting thing. Many Republicans are surprised. But it’s all part of the big shakedown in Schwarzworld, as I’ve been reporting with the revelation of the hiring of Susan Kennedy, the appointment of Matthew Dowd, the then coming departure of Mike Murphy, etc.
