This week Martin Garrick’s campaign for the open 74th Assembly District (disclosure – Coronado Communications client) announced more than $370,000 raised, along with a partial list of a formidable finance committee. In the last few weeks, Garrick has announced the endorsements of former United States Senator and California Governor Pete Wilson, State Senator Tom McClintock, San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego County Treasurer Dan McAllister, San Diego Assessor Greg Smith, and a host of former California Republican Party and San Diego Republican Party Chairmen, among others. Rumors have Scott Packard, son of former Congressman Ron Packard, considering an entrance into the race.
Meanwhile, in the 50th Congressional District self-financing businessman Alan Uke continues his television ad campaign. I’ve personally seen the ad several times, and I don’t really watch much besides the Simpsons, the Office, and the news. My guess is of the three, Nygren is aiming at the news watchers. Brian Bilbray earned the endorsement of neighboring Congressman Darrell Issa, who is burning up the phones. Gilliard has been brought on by the Bilbray campaign in a leadership role.
And in the City of San Diego there is increasing chatter about Councilwoman Donna Frye’s loss by +/- 3 points to Republican Jerry Sanders in her own 6th Council District in the November Mayor’s race. Most observers considered the 6th a safe bastion for Frye, but I disagree. Having polled the 6th for various reasons over the last few years it’s pretty clear that it is center-right rather than center-left like San Diego’s 2nd Council District. Actually, better description might actually be that a large number of the voters are actually populists. At one point, Frye could fairly easily be described as a populist, but in the November Mayoral campaign she allowed herself to be redefined among a significant share of the electorate as an old fashioned liberal Democrat. This re-definition is very dangerous for Frye among many of the economically pressured white and Vietnamese blue-collar Democrat and Independent households who look unfavorably on higher taxes or left of center social values. A good reform candidate may be able to put some serious pressure on her…?
I’ll leave the 77th up to Jantz.
P.S. I know this is incredibly self-serving, but our old building manager is going to decapitate me if he keeps getting our mail, and forwarding notices at the post office don’t appear to do the trick. Coronado Communications San Diego office has relocated further downtown: 964 Fifth Avenue, Suite 518, San Diego, 92101. Same phone number xxx-xxx-xxxx. Right in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter.
[Publisher’s note: We struck Duane’s phone number from the post, you can email him for that. Duane, we do not recommend that you publish your phone number on this site, given that it is read by thousands. Unless you want calls when you post some of your more preposterous stuff. – Flash]
