Postmus’ Bizarre Move – Legislature has failed on infrastructure.

Regarding the top story in today’s edition of the FlashReport — I think we are going to have to ask San Bernardino County Supervisor (and FlashReport friend) to share more about his plans with the readers of this fine publication.  While the level of political sophistication of FR readers varies from the interested reader to experience consultants, the idea of the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of a major county (that has no term limits) running for an obscure office (politically) like County Assessor seems like an odd move.  Add to it that Postmus has partisan politics running through his veins (he is also the Chairman of the San Bernardino County Republican Party), and you wonder what he is up to.  Bill is a chess player.  In political parlance, it means that like a successful chess player, he makes his decisions thinking about the longer-term ramifications.  Well, we invite the Supervisor to let us know why he would make this move… Until then… We’ll just be glad we’re not Donald Williamson!  Who’s he?  Oh, he is the incumbent Assessor in that county.  The one faced with two choices — celebrated retirement after a career of service to his constituents — or being run over by a freight train (Bill is the hardest and toughest campaigner I know).

BOND PLAN
I’m working now on a column that encapsulates my problems with the mega ‘borrow to build’ plan being espoused by our Governor.  But the key issue is this – Californians already pay more than enough in taxes to have a vital and vibrant infrastructure in place.  The Democrats in Sacramento have been squandering these funds in other ways, instead of focusing on the basics.  The focus needs to be on shifting budget priorities to where they should be, with significant funds being spent on infrastructure needs going-forward.  More on this to come…

SUSAN KENNEDY
The former Executive Director of the California Democratic Party has finished up her first week as the Governor’s Chief of Staff.  I had a chance to meet her, briefly, during my visit to Sacramento for the State of the State Address.  Very personable.  Word is that she has brought strong organizational skills, and a keen mind for policy with her into the office.  That said, in the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more about this controversial pick by a Republican Governor to run his staff.  One thing is for sure, she certainly must be very comfortable with this new ‘borrow to build’ proposal, since it is the politicians of her party that have created our infrastructure problem by not investing our tax dollars into needed projects.

THE WEEK AHEAD
This coming week, look for original, exclusive columns in the FlashReport EVERY DAY.  Also, this coming week comes the promised unveiling of our new comment system, that will allow you, as a FR reader, to register here, and then be able to post your thoughts, comments, observations, criticisms of the things I say on this page, as well as to any of the thoughts expressed by the Weblog contributors.

Have a great Saturday!
