There is no doubt that Americans owe a great deal to ancient Greek civilization that once dominated the Eastern Mediterranean, including the island of Cyprus. It is to them and their experiment with democracy that we can trace the roots of our own democratic institutions.

Of course, a lot can change in 2,500 years and, today, we fear that our leaders may be tempted to follow the modern Greek example of governance and taxation. Greece, itself has become the poster child for overpaying underperforming government workers and for creating an unsustainable entitlement-based society. Sound familiar?

When the government attempted to rein in spending and limit benefits to remain solvent, the result was rioting in the streets. Greece is classified as one of the PIIGS that constitute Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain, all mismanaged nations teetering on the brink of economic collapse and threatening to bring down the viability of the European Union.

Some people want something so badly, they’ll sell their souls to the devil, they’ll ignore facts, reason and important details. A case in point is Sacramento politicians, and the ongoing arena obsession.

Sacramento’s Mayor Kevin Johnson, tweeted Saturday evening he and city officials have reached a $447.7 million arena deal at the Downtown Plaza with a public-private partnership.

There’s only one problem — Sacramento can’t afford it.

Billed as “the largest redevelopment project in city history,” the project will have up to 1.5 million square feet of offices, housing, stores and a high-rise hotel.

After decades of telling women to burn their bras, divorce their husbands, shun motherhood, and pursue careers, feminists have now discovered how wonderful it is to stay at home with the babies.

“A growing number of women are dismissing the career-driven conventions they were raised with, saying no to full-time work; believing instead that every household needs one primary caretaker – the mother,” the Daily Mail UK reported this week.

And they are calling themselves “feminist housewives.” Titles are very important to some people. I pity their husbands.

An interesting argument has sprung up on FlashReport between Ray Haynes and John Hrabe about gays.

Haynes went first in a long article that tried to make a libertarian case for two social conservative causes, pro-life and pro-traditional-marriage.

Haynes said:

“The pro-life position is the more difficult position to defend… because the pro-abortion lobby has seized on the liberty agenda to promote abortion.”

But the usurpation of the liberty argument isn’t Haynes only problem. It’s not even the biggest. Haynes’ first problem is weak assumptions, like:

“Government is created to protect the weaker members of society from the involuntary intrusions on their personal security or property interests by the more powerful.”

And like:

“Families were developed to create as safe an environment as possible to raise children. Marriage was created as an institution to grow and nurture children, and protect women, who are the usual caregivers to children, from economic harm as they are raising children.”

Government power is backed by force. And when that force is used to require someone to perform an act which violates their personal moral code or religious belief, that force is an invasion of individual liberty.

Under current law, everyone has the right, regardless of sexual orientation, to

“determine how to purchase property, transfer property after death, or share property as joint tenants. These contracts hypothetically might include the freedom to contract for services, such as making health decisions when incapacitated, or providing comfort at a patient’s bedside,”

quoting Mr. Hrabe, in his response to my article on liberty. The debate on gay marriage and gay rights today is not a debate about freedom of contract, it is a debate about using the force of government to require people to accept homosexual behavior, no matter what their personal or religious beliefs happen to be. It is an invasion of religious freedom, no matter how the argument is couched. That is why the current debates on gay marriage and gay rights are anti-liberty.
