STATE GOP TAPS FUNDRAISING VETERANS FOR KEY POSTS
The California Republican Party (of which I am an elected officer) has made a couple of key announcements concerning its finance team for this election cycle which are worthy of mention.
The first is that Tony Russo, who served as Chairman of the Party’s Team California Program last cycle will reprise his role. This is a key position for the party, and under Russo’s leadership last cycle, working with the leadership of the State GOP, over $14 million was raised for party operations and candidate support.
The other announcement is that Jeff Miller (pictured) will be back with the CRP (having last been there when I was Executive Director, back in the 2000 cycle) – taking on the role of Finance Chairman. Miller has strong credentials and an energetic and focused fundraiser, and currently serves as a Co-Chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association.
In their capacities, both Russo and Miller will serve as member of the State GOP’s Board of Directors.
We should note that readers should not confuse this Jeff Miller with Assemblyman Jeff Miller. Although they will work closely as the Assemblyman is the point person for Assembly campaigns on behalf of his caucus.
Welcome back to both of these FR friends.
“LISTEN OF THE DAY” COMES FROM PUBLIC CEO…
James Specer of Public CEO has a delightful post up on their website where they have an actual audio recording from the Public Administrator of a recreation district, who is as rude as can be to someone who has made a request of her. It starts off, “I’m curious about why in the hell you would want our staff e-mails….”
You can check out the whole thing here.
“FIRST MAN” OF THE STATE DEPARTMENT TO CAMPAIGN FOR NEWSOM
The campaign of Ess Eff Mayor Gavin Newsom has announced that former President Bill Clinton will participate in two events in Los Angeles for the Mayor’s Gubernatorial campaign – one of them being a fundraiser. Back in “the day” Clinton was seen as a prolific fundraiser – we’ll see if he still has the muscle. Of course, no word if he waived his reported $50k speaking fee for these appearances… FR friend Professor Jack Pitney reminds us why Clinton might want to help out Newsom…
ARNOLD’S ENERGY POLICY WILL HURT CALIFORNIA ECONOMY
Today in a story by Susan Ferriss in the Sacramento Bee, she talks about how apparently Governor Schwarzenegger plans, with the stroke of a pen, to sign an Executive order direct the California Air Resources Board to come up with regulations on how utilities can meet a mandate, championed by the Governor, to require that 1/3 of energy used in California comes from “renewable” sources.
This is exactly what California should not be doing as we sit here mired in a recession. Right now, the priority should be getting our state’s economy back on track. This is not done with increased and new regulation, but rather by getting government out of the way so that the economy can kick back into gear. The Governor, instead of issuing this executive order today, should call for a suspension of this unrealistic mandate that will cost California taxpayers billions of dollars, and to untold harm to the ecomony. (And if we hear any more stupid arguments that this kind of policy creates "green jobs" we’re going to puke. Yeah, of course new jobs are created by this mandate, but at the much larger expense of non-green jobs!)
REST IN PEACE PATRICK SWAYZE
After a battle with cancer, at the age of 57, actor Patrick Swayze has passed away. He will be remembered for appearing in dozens of films throughout his career. While perhaps best known for his appearances in blockbusters Dirty Dancing and Ghost, we here at FR (with a nod to “Red Dawn”) think he best role was that of “Dalton” in the film Road House…
