UPDATED: Next Gay Marriage Battle Will Be In 2012

UPDATE:

This just in from ProtectMarriage.com – a statement from Ron Prentice:

"The decision today by EQ CA demonstrates the difficulty of the task to turn back Prop 8, traditional marriage, and the will of the people. The best opportunity to enforce same-sex was in last November’s election. More and more people in California and across the country are becoming informed of marriage’s meaning to children and society. The ProtectMarriage.com coalition will continue and expand their educational approach in the neighborhoods of California to reinforce Prop 8’s standing and value."

Original Post (1130am):

Just a few minutes ago, the folks over at Equality California, the umbrella group for those advocating the overturning of California’s definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman.  The purpose of their call was to share with the media and bloggers whether they would pursue a drive to qualify a measure to overturn Prop. 8 for next year, or for 2012.

A representative of the FlashReport was on the call…

THE ADVOCATES OF GAY MARRIAGE HAVE DECIDED TO WAIT UNTIL 2012.

Our person on the call reports that on the conference call, the Equality California people said that they among their factors for deciding to wait were:

  • 2012’s Presidential Election, they believe, presents them with a better opportunity for passage.
  • The voter makeup in that Presidential election will be younger.
  • Major donors to their cause have asked that a campaign wait until 2012

So while we will have a crazy election year in 2010, this particularly divisive yet entertaining-to-cover issue will be punted to 2012.

We have reached out to the folks at ProtectMarriage.com for comment…
