In my conversations with Republican Leaders in the State Legislature, there has always been one caveat to the line in the sand drawn against raising taxes, at least temporarily. They have consistently told me that they would at least entertain the thought if Democrats would put on the table placing a real spending limit measure on the ballot that, if passed, would place a modest and real hard limit on the annual allowable growth rate of state government.
In other words, Republicans have little interest in punishing taxpayers for overspending, and at the very minimum, the system that allows the overspending needs to be fixed.
Today there is an article in the Los Angeles Times that talks about a potential deal in the works (though the reporter notes that the deal may be falling apart as the specifics leak out) involving a substantial hike in the state car tax in return for placing a spending cap measure on the ballot.

Democrats want to raise taxes?
I thought the Govenror was a Republican? Doesn’t he have a better right to speak for Republicans than an “elected Vice Chairman South”?

More than the perfect storm…falling economy, declining stock market, auto companies going BK. And California is in debt about 20% of its purported budget now and for five years in the future.
What is one to do. You cannot expect failed attornies turned politicans, bloated deer in the head lights gov. workers and corrupt lobbyists to resolve the California part of this economic mess.
Ah….a glimmer….raise taxes..Calvin Coolidge and Franklin D. Roosevelt did….they were real smart dudes…AND PROLONGED THE DEPRESSION FOR YEARS.
So….Not On My Watch Bass and Bye Bye Perata, the New Commissar on the Block Steinberg and a failed governor have been handed the total power over our economic futures in California…heaven help us!!!!

Mr. Bosich,
By “Calvin Coolidge” did you mean “Herbert Hoover”?
Also, Mr. Cavala,
Jon Fleishman has just as much right to speak with authority as does that squish Arnie…and with much better reasoning too.

Any GOP Legislator dare to vote for any tax increase will do so at his/her own peril: FACE RECALL or Primary Challenge in June of 2010.
Cut spending and leave the family budget alone.
Bring out the budget AX and hammer away the programs!

Arnold’s right to speak on behalf of the Republican Party has been revoked, he should do us all a favor and register as something else. He is the new poster boy for the RINO cause.
