Unsolicited Advice for GOP Candidates in the 15th Assembly District

A lot of folks know that I live a few blocks from the border between my own 18th AD and the 15th, and I’m frequently asked/pestered about why I’m not blogging on the race…so I’m coming clean.

I’m bored out of my mind.

I see all the press releases for the candidates, and they all basically fall into three categories:
* I’m having a fundraiser
* Here’s my latest bank statement
* Here’s a list of my friends who say nice things about me

That’s the typical stuff that interests the lobbyists and Sacramento folks, but the community can’t even work up a full-fledged yawn over this.

Candidates, you are following a very tough act. Assemblyman Houston gained strong support each election cycle, despite his GOP registration numbers falling off the map. Yes, he had fundraisers, demonstrated a healthy bank account, and had a long list of endorsements. But to the community, his outreach was about community issues.

Folks, you’re running in a district that could go to either party. If you want to be the break out candidate, start sending out press releases that talk about what voters care about. Keep raising money, and all that, but you’re running in a Presidential year when the GOP is likely to take a beating thanks the pedophiles, thieves, and stall solicitors we elected. Start talking about the issues that are unique and important to Galt, Elk Grove, Livermore, Walnut Creek, etc. Start talking about the initiatives that will be on the ballot, and where you stand. You won’t win the primary or the general if you continue to be a cardboard cut out of a GOP candidate who could be running anywhere.

What do I know, right? I lost my bid for Assembly, but as an innocent bystander who can’t vote for any of you, I beg you…

Tell voters your story about why you care about them. Take risks. Take sides. Be unique and genuine. Let’s get this party started!

    Epicurus wrote it 2300 years ago, “All other forms of love are
    extinguished by self-love.”

    Translation to today: the voters want to know what a candidate
    is going to do FOR THEM, not have to hear how wonderful the
    candidate is.

    No wonder the Greeks invented Democracy !

    You’ve got that right! if you add Epicurius’ notion to the “love thy neighbor as you love yourself” idea, you’ve got a wiining combination for the ideal candidate for public service!
