And I don’t mean to pick on John. He is a good man, but the problem is that this contest presumes there should be more laws and more controls by a bigger government. Sen. Tom Harman did such a contest and then took the idea from one kid to force other kids to "volunteer" before they could graduate. Sen. Harman and this kid didn’t see that forcing someone to "volunteer" means you are no longer "volunteering".
Republican lawmakers should show leadership and help kids learn. They should sponsor "There Ought NOT To Be A Law" contests among high school students. Turn these kids loose on the thousands of pages of Education Code and have them come up with something that needs to be repealed.
Shouldn’t we send the message that government is too big and controls too much of our lives rather than we need more nanny state laws?

Don’t be so short-sighted, Mike. What if the winning idea is to repeal all the current laws?

This is the new libertarian Mike Spence emerging. The fact is, generally, most new laws encroach on our freedom and grows government.

People joke that we’re safer when the Legislature is not session, but it is true. As long as they’re not in session they can’t raise our taxes and pass onerous laws that take away our freedoms. BTW Mike, that was an excellent speech Monday at the OC Central Committee meeting.

Now Shawn, are you trying to get Mike kicked out as Pres. of CRA?
