Today’s Commentary: Run, Brad, Run!

Mitzelfelt Should Announce for San Bernardino Supe Re-Elect…Soon

As has been reported in these pages, San Bernardino County’s newest Supervisor, Brad Mitzelfelt, was appointed a month ago by his colleagues to serve the remaining months of the term of popular departing incumbent Bill Postmus.  FR Friend Postmus was elected to serve as Assessor and he enjoyed seeing his former chief-of-staff take over his seat.

Of course Mitzelfelt, a former FlashReport Correspondent, has a distinguished career in public service, which includes a stint as a gubernatorial appointee to his county’s Fair Board and as Chairman of the Victor Valley Transit Authority.  In fact, Mitzlefelt’s keen understanding of local government has helped him get off to a tremendous start in his new role as a supervisor.  He has already outlined a broad policy agenda that charts a course of improving public safety, boosting economic development and investing in critical infrastructure.

Just this week, the Board Supervisors approved a Mitzelfelt-endorsed plan to give the District Attorney a Civil Injunctions Unit to further escalate the county’s war on gangs. Read about it here.  And Mitzelfelt was able to secure a third of the county’s state-bond funds for parks for his High Desert district, despite the fact that he only represents one-fifth of the county’s population.   Mitzelfelt is proving that he both gets it –and more importantly – he is getting it done.

I have known Brad for 15 years.  As a committed Republican, Brad has never shied away from carrying our party’s banner.  He has been a Republican leader since his honorable discharge from the Marines at the age of 24.  He has spent nearly all of his adult life fighting to elect conservatives to office.

And while Brad is settling into his new job, he’s enjoying somewhat of a honeymoon with the press, and most of his potential future opposition is giving him a wide berth to see how he does, I hope Brad realizes that this situation will not last long.  While the next election for First District supervisor isn’t scheduled ’till June 2008, numerous potential candidates are jockeying for position behind the scenes and, I suspect, will soon begin either overtly or covertly undermining Mitzelfelt to test his strength.

So while Brad has not publicly stated his intentions on whether or not he will stand for election, in part because he’s engaged to be married this summer and doesn’t want to rush the decision, I must strenuously state my position right now that Brad should, unquestionably, announce his intentions to stand for election, and to do it as soon as possible.

Come on, Brad!  Get the lead out and announce.

While I think Brad should defintely run in 2008, I think we can give him until after his wedding to make that announcement…he has a lot on his plate to concentrate on…marriage is forever – the office he may seek is not. I am very happy to see that Brad is making such an impact in his first month!
