Michelle Steel Puts Together A Great Team

In Ronald Reagan’s White House, there was an adage that “Personnel is Policy.” That those who are in the room to make the recommendations do matter.

So, it is always good to see when elected officials’ offices are filled with good people. Michelle Steel’s is one that certainly meets that standard.

Erik Caldwell comes to Michelle’s office as her Chief of Staff/Chief Deputy/Whatever they call it in the BOE from being President of the San Diego Young Republicans and once upon a time as President of the statewide College Republicans.

Ken Maddox is Michelle’s Director of Legislative Affairs. Ken is a former Army Officer, former Assemblyman, and former CRA-backed candidate for State Senate. In addition, and more near and dear to me, Ken is a former member of California YAF.

John Hrabe is Michelle’s Communications Director. John also is an established activist, currently serving as Executive Director for YRFC. Before he moved down to LA to work for Michelle, when he used to spend his days working in the Capitol for some of the good guy Assemblymembers, John also helped lead the fight against the proposed tax hike that would’ve gone to build a new basketball arena in Sacramento.

Ed Chen is Special Assistant to Michelle. Ed currently is Executive Director of Cal-YAF, and has put in stints with Assemblyman Bob Huff and Senator Bob Margett’s offices.

Peter Kim is the Administrative Assistant in Michelle’s office. He comes to the BOE having previously served the great union-thwarting Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao.

Neil Shah and Jennifer Williams round out the office. Neil is the lone holdover from Claude Parrish’s office, while Jennifer was previously a Legislative Assistant to the Assembly Republican Caucus.

If personnel really is policy, we can expect some great things out of BOE Member Michelle Steel’s office.

Brandon, my friend Don Devine on the American Conservative Union Board helped coin the phrase “personnel is policy” during the Reagan Administration, where he served as Reagan’s first Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, overseeing the rules for the Federal bureaucracy. Imagine having an ACU Board member in that role today. Those were the days……
