The following report is filed ‘from the field’ by California Republican Party Vice Chairman Ron Nehring:
I’m sending this report from the parking lot outside the packed Victory headquarters in Pleasanton in Alameda County, heart of the battle for control of Congress as the campaign of Congressman Pombo takes on the forces of liberalism for control of the 11th congressional district. One of tonight’s phoners is Jill Buck, Republican nominee for State Assembly and a real superstar running an aggressive campaign in a district that’s challenging for any Republican. Earlier in the day I visited the Stockton Victory headquarters where Central Valley volunteers were working to turn out voters on the other side of the hill. From there it was to Mountain View where Santa Clara Chairman Keen Butcher was helping to make calls pushing the entire Republican ticket in the Silicon Valley.
The 11th district is a challenging one for Republicans, reaching from the Valley cities of Lodi and Stockton over in to the Bay Area to take in Pleasanton, Danville, San Ramon, and reaching all the way south to Morgan Hill. It’s a top priority for both parties. Congressman Pombo, who chairs the House Resources Committee, deserves an enormous amount of credit for championing common sense reform of the Endangered Species Act and protecting property rights. Someone other than Richard Pombo might have shied away from supporting these solid principles, based on the marginal nature of the district. But Pombo has doesn’t compromise on his principles, making it especially important for our party to make every effort to return him to Congress for another term.
Now it’s out to Jerry Brown’s Oakland (with its sky high crime rate – remember to vote for Chuck Poochigian) for a flight back down to San Diego.
