I had to blink hard this morning before I could believe I was reading the San Bernardino County Sun, which editorialized the following pronouncement:
"…let it be known that (Congressman Jerry) Lewis is an upstanding representative of the highest integrity…"
This from a paper whose reporters of late have detailed ad nauseum Lewis’ life and career (e.g. "Deconstructing Jerry,") in the wake of questionable investigations and non-accusations against the Redlands Republican who chairs the House Appropriations Committee.
Today’s editorial seems a little late in coming: UNFAIR INQUIRY: Lewis, ESRI undeserving of witch hunt

Lewis is one of the reasons we may in fact lose control of the house. How does vice-chair of the House Appropriations Committee sound?
IMHO, this guy deserves everything that is being thrown at him.

Comments like that may be harmless. But, over time and in great numbers they can contribute to two possible outcomes. First is the possibility of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Second, that the Dems will become overconfident as conventional (and questionable) wisdom says the Reps will lose Congress. Regardless, a person who disagrees with Lewis on policy shouldn’t cheer on those who would engage in character assassination. Seems some Reps only heed Reagan’s 11th Commandment when it’s convenient.
