The Talkers vs. The Doers

The analysis of this past election and the current status of the political parties was all wrong. The focus has been on the fact that the highly educated are centered in the Democrat party and the less educated are voting Republicans. This analysis misses the mark because the reality is there is a division between the Talkers and the Doers. You can probably figure out which group is in which political party.

This became crystallized to me when I engaged in helping some people dealing with an elderly parent who was no longer able to live independently. Though all three are highly educated and functioning
members of society, they have no experience in this arena as almost no one does until it happens.

I have a relationship with someone who has developed senior housing for over forty years. He is unusual because he not only develops and builds communities but is also the operator. He knows these issues thoroughly and would do anything to help me because of our relationship. I asked him to help, and he said where and when. He is what we call a Doer.

As the aforementioned three siblings were attempting to feel their way around, they made pilgrimages from the Northeast to Southern Florida to understand the issues. One of them has a master’s degree in nursing. She did her analysis after visiting her parent.

My friend connected with one of the siblings who then called me after speaking for over an hour. He was bubbling with enthusiasm. He raved about how fantastic, knowledgeable, and helpful my friend (the developer) was to him. He told me that because of the limited resources of the parent, he must relocate from his expensive area to somewhere with a more affordable facility. He stated how happy he was my friend had advised that even though he operates some high-end facilities. He then told me his sister was arguing against that. She stated to him that she understood this issue because “I took a class in Health Care Finance.” I nearly fell off my chair laughing. She is a Talker.

That is exactly the divide we now have in this country. Our outgoing President is a Talker. He never had a job in private industry and gained all his knowledge through committee hearings, sometimes listening to Doers, but mostly to Talkers. There was only one person in his cabinet who had ever had a job in private industry. All the rest are Talkers. But they all know better than we do. Why? Because of their so-called “better” educations or they read studies by others who have likewise never really done anything.

The incoming presidential administration is made up of Doers. The head person is a Doer. Some people complained about how many billionaires are working with Trump. There is little talk that they are all self-made. They created things. They improved our lives. They hired thousands of people. They know success, but they also know failure. One always learns from failures.

My particular interest where there are Talkers and Doers is in housing and building. I was always fascinated by people who got college degrees in urban planning. With their college degree they were going to work for a government agency that told builders and developers what they should do with their proposed projects. They have no skin in the game, but are controlling the work of the Doers, i.e., the risk-takers. They should be required to work a minimum of three years for a developer to learn the reality of what it takes to develop in their community. Is there any wonder why there are an estimated 770,000 homeless Americans? It is the Talkers stifling the Doers.

One of my favorite stories about America is concerning the 1972 far-left presidential candidate George McGovern of Minnesota. After he left the U.S. Senate, he acquired an inn in Connecticut. It was his first venture into the capitalist world. He told reporters, “I didn’t realize how difficult we make it for people running businesses.”

There is a lot of talk about the amalgamation of people that Trump collected in support of his campaign. Talkers could not figure out why. It is because they are all Doers. Trump is a Doer. They are all sick of the Talkers dragging down our country. This country was built by Doers and now we are taking it back.

A friend of mine told me about his trip to Israel and interacting with the Israelis regarding medical issues. My friend is a doctor. While working with one lady she said to him, “What happened to America?” I will tell you what happened. We have let Talkers take too much control of our lives. The American people know that and then they voted them out of office. They voted for Trump over the ultimate example of a Talker.

Now we can move forward and make a better life for Americans. The best part is we will not have to hear about another “study” or what the “experts” think. Thank God. Goodbye Talkers.
