FlashReport readers anxiously awaiting my post-convention write up will need to wait until tomorrow’s issue. As is often the case, because I am not only writing about the GOP confab, but was a participant in it, I get home not only totally spent (both emotionally and physically) – but I also had to get up in the wee hours to pull together our main page for today.
I will take a moment to share some broader observations about this event. First and foremost is that in talking to the delegates on hand, there is resolve in working to ensure that the GOP tide that is clearly sweeping the nation crash straight into California and sweep a lot of Democrats into the ocean. Meg Whitman delivered a great speech to enthusiastic delegates on Friday night and Carly Fiorina dazzled a large lunchtime crowd with her excoriation of Barbara Boxer. I had the handy FlashFlipCam at the lunch, so here is a great clip of Carly on fire….
I should add that the funniest part of Carly’s speech was when she made a Freudian slip and called referred to Barbara Boxer as Barbara Streisand. She laughed about it, and so did the rest of us.
Almost all of the statewide nominees spoke at various functions throughout the weekend (we’ll highlight some clips during the week – at least from events where I had the Flip camera along).
If there is any year for Republicans to make gains in statewide office in California, this is that year. And you could sense that delegates knew this. One delegate shared with me that she was excited to be leaving the “era of Arnold” and instead moving into a time that would be much more exciting, with real Republicans propelled into positions of governance.
For my part, I was very ginned up and am looking forward to an exciting close over the next couple of months.
I look at Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer, and I see tired liberalism of yesterday. I look at our ticket, and I see an opportunity to put Republican ideas and ideals into work! I know the convention closed with delegates from every corner of the state headed home to roll up their sleeves and work hard to elect our ticket in November!
In my write up for tomorrow, look for a lot more of the “nitty gritty” in terms of the party’s actions (or inactions) on rules, resolutions, and positioning on ballot measures. I will endeavor to the best of my ability (taking into account that some confidences must be maintained) the “back stories” about some of what went on over the weekend. Later in the week, we’ll wrap up our post-convention coverage with our acclaimed “Winners and Losers” of the convention column, you won’t want to miss that!
In the meantime, don’t miss great original columns in FR today from Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, and Tom Del Beccaro, Vice Chairman of the California Republican Party!

If everyone keeps telling me that we are going to win because of diversity, then maybe I should become a Democrat: They have actual quotas to make SURE they have diversity!
