Mid Day ReCap: Rasmussen Brown/Poizner matchup at 43% – 42% – and more…

*  For the first time, Rasmussen is
reporting that Steve Poizner is actually polling better in a matchup against Jerry Brown than is his primary foe Meg Whitman.

Democratic State Attorney General Jerry Brown’s post-convention bounce appears to be over, and he now posts narrow leads over both his Republican challengers in California’s gubernatorial race.

The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters shows Brown picking up 43% support, while Steve Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner earns 42%. Seven percent (7%) would vote for some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided.

A month ago, just after the California Democratic Convention, Brown led Poizner 50% to 32%. Poizner earned just 27% support in March. Brown’s support now matches findings in February and March.

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman’s support also has inched up slightly this month. Brown now earns 45% support over Whitman’s 41%. Eight percent (8%) would vote for some other candidate, and seven percent (7%) are undecided.

In April, Brown led Whitman 44% to 38%. But the two candidates have been tied in three of the last five surveys, stretching back to November.

*  FR friend Adam Radman over at the Americans for Tax Reform blog contrasts Carly Fiorina and Tax Campbell on the issue of taxes (he doesn’t mention Chuck DeVore, who is a solid anti-tax legislator), "While Fiorina and DeVore have taken the Pledge never to raise their constituents’ taxes, Campbell has flat out refused to make such a stand. While still claiming to be a fiscal conservative, Tom Campbell has supported a number of tax hikes over the last several years as both a gubernatorial candidate and Senate candidate. Primary voters should take that into consideration as they vote on June 8th."

* According to the Sacramento Bee’s Capitol Alert blog, "The Susan B. Anthony List announced today that it would launch a ‘voter education’ campaign, including online and e-mail advertising and targeted calls to 600,000 Republican voters, highlighting ‘Fiorina’s strong pro-life position and ability to beat (Democratic Sen. Barbara) Boxer in November.

* In Red County, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steel blasts the President for prioritizing raising money for Barbara Boxer here in California over focusing on the oil spill off of the Gulf coast…  "While millions of gallons of crude oil have been leaking into the Gulf of Mexico, President Obama has been busy working the fundraising circuit for endangered Democrats like Barbara Boxer…"

* Last but not least, California GOP Congressman Darrell Issa has made it clear — if the President of the United States offered Pennsylvania Democrat Congressman Joe Sestek a government job to try to get him out of his (successful) primary challenge to Senator Arlen Specter, that may be an impeachable offense… "It’s very clear that allegation is one that everyone from Arlen Spector to Dick Morris has said is in fact a crime, and could be impeachable," said Issa, who is threatening to file an ethics compliant if Sestak doesn’t provide more details about the alleged job offer.
