GOP Consultant/Strategist Marty Wilson (pictured) is driving things over at the Carly Fiorina for U.S. Senate Campaign. With the latest numbers out from the Field Poll, Wilson fired off an e-mail a few folks — one of whom sent a copy of it along to us. We thought, while protecting our source, we’d post it up for your perusal…

Subject: State of the Race Update
Primary elections are like the game show Family Feud: painful to watch, occasionally funny and astonishingly revealing. Today’s Field Poll begins to bring the California Senate race into focus and leads us to two conclusions. First, the primary is a race between Carly Fiorina and Tom Campbell, as Chuck DeVore continues to perform in the single-digit range after 16 months in the race. Second, Barbara Boxer is vulnerable based on Field’s results, as well as a number of other published surveys.
Here is Field’s primary head-to-head:
Tom Campbell 28 percent
Carly Fiorina 22 percent
Chuck DeVore 9 percent
Undecided 41 percent
The margin of error (MOE) for the primary is 5.5 percent, which puts Carly in a statistical tie with Campbell with a large block of undecided voters.
All three Republicans poll within Boxer’s MOE, which proves the basic premise among pundits inside and outside California that Barbara Boxer is vulnerable.
So who would be the toughest opponent for Boxer in the fall? Carly or Campbell? Inquiring minds want to know, and the answer is driven by something other than data. It’s the lost art of common sense. I know it’s old school, but try it and see how it works for you.
We’ll start by reviewing two videos from the most recent California Republican Party convention last weekend. First, here are some excerpts from Carly’s blockbuster of a speech on Saturday. Next are some excerpts from Tom Campbell’s Friday press conference where he once again desperately tries to explain his ties to two longtime campaign supporters who have been convicted of helping domestic terrorist organizations like the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. This falls into the categories of “painful to watch” and “astonishingly reveling.” Here is Tom’s contrasting performance .
Tom’s latest tactic is to apologize for not getting his facts straight about actions he took as a candidate for Senate in 2000 and later after he had returned to private life. But even in the midst of his apology for not getting his facts straight, he still can’t get his facts straight.
Some would like us to believe that Tom is the prototypical absent-minded professor. I must admit I don’t know too many professors. Heck, the only time I was invited inside the college faculty club was to bus tables. But I do know my country music, and when I look at Tom looking about as comfortable as a tree stump engulfed by Kudzu, I am reminded of the song “I Forgot to Remember to Forget.”
Common sense tells us Carly is the clear choice to take on and beat Barbara Boxer.
Have a nice day.
