Some tidbits, moments of brilliance and just plain fun from the past seven days…
Politics 101 of the Week… He will forever be known as Hot Mic Duvall, but whether the resigned California assemblyman was telling tall tales of exploit out of turn, or being the male Anaïs Nin of the legislature, the incident did result in more than a few snickers from several corners. "Overheard" on Facebook from an unknown original source is this profound political lesson:
"Always know when the microphone is on. Oh … and don’t have affairs and stuff like that."
Sports 101 of the Week (or, a lesson on the ones you don’t take home to mom)… My message to a San Diego Chargers defender regarding his recent alleged domestic flap with a reality TV "star":
"Hey Shawne! First clue this would mean trouble? Uhhh, she named herself after alcohol."
(H/T to Scott Johnston for the thought.)
Issa: Healthcare for all, just like the Congress… You gotta love Congressman Darrell Issa. After the President’s joint session address on Wednesday night, Issa shot out a release on what I’ll call the Healthcare Equity Act of 2009. Read the excerpts:
We Can Give Americans Access to the Same Benefit Plans Members of Congress Receive…Right Now!
During his address to a joint session of the Congress, President Barack Obama said of health benefit plans: “It’s how everyone in this Congress gets affordable insurance. And it’s time to give every American the same opportunity that we give ourselves.” House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-CA) has introduced legislation, H.R. 3438, the Access to Insurance for All Americans Act, which would give all Americans access to the same health benefit plans that Members of Congress and federal employees choose from for their health care coverage:
“Legislation to achieve the President’s goal of leveling the playing field so Americans can choose from the same health benefit plans that Members of Congress and federal employees select from already exists. Why shouldn’t the American people have the same options and opportunities we do? This meaningful reform can be implemented immediately and without the need to create an entirely new bureaucracy to implement it."
Here’s some more, including a Fox News video of Issa discussing his legislation.
Speaking of Government Healthcare, a Bit of True Brilliance…
During his address, when President Obama referenced the letter from Senator Ted Kennedy, the following, posted on Facebook, pretty much provided a jolt of reality:
"Oh, snap! Obama pulls the Ted Kennedy card, "letters from beyond the grave"! Hey, I have a letter from beyond the grave from James Madison, it’s called the Constitution. Go read it."

Do you hear what I hear?… East County Magazine broke the news two days ago (worth the read) that the San Diego Sheriff’s Department had sonic weaponry in place at two recent town hall events held by Issa and Congresswoman Susan Davis as a potential means of crowd control. This has both many liberals and civil libertarian-minded conservatives surprised (or irate), with the issue already being raised yesterday in a Sheriff’s candidate debate.
Let’s face it, all those wing nuts showing up at town halls upset about the thought of government run healthcare must be dealt with effectively, don’t you know? Yet, in my case, acoustic weapons wouldn’t impact me, as I’m from East San Diego County and already wear a home made tin-foil skull cap to ward off the messages emitted from black helicopters. Not that I’m really worried about black helicopters. Ever since I’ve been drinking fluoridated water, they don’t bother me so much anymore. All that said, I’d still rather go to Santee and get a Sonic Burger than worry about sonic weaponry.
Have a great week!

He will forever be known as “Spanky” Duvall – Steve Lopez’s column in yesterday’s LA Times was hilarious!
