Proponents of 1A-1F Blow Past “Desperation Mode” To “Resigned to Defeat” Mode

The Budget Reform Now strategy team has apparently blown right past ‘desperation stage’ — where they decided to try to make the case that a vote against Propositions 1A-1F would mean the layoff of so many firefighters that public safety would be endanged — to a new stage that we will call ‘resigned to defeat.’

I don’t know what else to call it when you roll out, as they did just a few minutes ago, the endorsement of none other than disgraced, recalled former Governor Gray Davis.

Yes, you read that right.  In modern history only one Governor has been recalled over the issue of mismanagement of the state’s fiscal situation — and that was Gray Davis.

You have to wonder what the conversation was like in headquarters.

"Gee, look at the PPIC numbers, and they aren’t nearly as bad as our internal polling shows."

"Yeah, the firefighter threat strategy really tanked, and now we really haven’t got anything left to do but spend all of this money we have on television, so we can at least get those media buy commissions processed."

"Hey, remember how we all felt really bad because Gray Davis called and endorsed the Propositions, but we all laughed when he got off of the phone because you can’t put out the endorsement of a recalled, disgraced ex-Governor?"

"Yeah, I remember that?  Poor guy — I wonder if anyone even talks to him in the grocery store?"

"Well, I guess since we are going to lose anyways, why don’t we perform a kind act of charity, and release his endorsement?"

"Hey, that’s a great idea.  Hey, do we have an endorsement from Kevin Shelley around here?  I’m pretty sure we could get that out, too?  Maybe a joint release?"

"Ahh, we have become terribly cynical — but let’s get that Davis release out.  It’s the least we can do for someone who was dumped out of office in a recall."

I can’t get the phrase Davis kept uttering at one of his re-election rallies…”quatros anos mas” out of my head. What a dork!
