Over the past few days, along with other FR friends, I have been reaching out to GOP legislators up and down California, assessing where they stand on what has become the very controversial Proposition 1A. As many FR readers know, most Republican legislators voted to place 1A on the ballot when it was a straightforward clean, somewhat modest improvement to our state’s current chaotic spending ways. That said, when six Republican legislators (Senators Ashburn, Cogdill and Maldonado, Assemblymen Adams, Niello and Villines) voted with all of the Democrats to pass the largest tax increase in the state’s history (which the Governor signed), they also passed even more taxes ($16 billion worth) that are triggered if Proposition 1A passes.
Where do GOP legislators stand on 1A now, knowing the tax implications for all Californians (as of 4 p.m. on March 23)?
Two-thirds of State Senate Republicans are publicly opposed to Proposition 1A: Sam Aanestad, John Benoit, Jeff Denham, Bob Dutton, Tom Harman, Dennis Hollingsworth, George Runner, Tony Strickland, Mimi Walters, and Mark Wyland.
Four Republican Senators are publicly supporting Proposition 1A: Roy Ashburn, Dave Cogdill, Bob Huff, and Abel Maldonado.
One Republican Senator has no public position on 1A: Dave Cox.
Three Assembly Republicans publicly support Proposition 1A: Anthony Adams, Roger Niello, and Mike Villines.
Three Assembly Republicans have no public position on 1A: Connie Conway, Paul Cook and Nathan Fletcher.
We are still in the process of connecting up with eight legislators, to ascertain their positions on 1A, and will update this list as we do so: Bill Berryhill, Tom Berryhill, Sam Blakeslee, Bill Emmerson, Jean Fuller, Danny Gilmore, Steve Knight, and Jim Nielson.
It’s always challenging to try and "juggle the balls" of a keeping track of positions of 45 elected officials. Invariably there will be updates, so check back!

Interesting to see that when Prop 1A came to the floor of the Assembly only 3 GOP Members voted against it…now when the cat was out of the bag on the REAL raw deal, 3 now became 15…
Wow! Talk about skinning a cat.

Since we know that the fix was in, I don’t think that the position of any Assembly Republican matters at all.

We have to begin by speaking with one voice, not with a “wink and a nod”. The voters know what is going on and the CRP is not giving clear leadership on this as shown by this report. Read it and weep.
