It’s mid-January of what is supposed to be the “off year” for campaigns, but let me assure you that everything is “on” when we talk about the volume of activity taking place in what are the first few lengths of a very long horse race for the GOP nomination for Governor in 2010.
With our focus on the overspending crisis in the Capitol, there have been a number of items building up, so we’ll try to give you one comprehensive “cleaning out” of the GOP Governor 2010 inbox:
MEG WHITMAN BRINGS ON SOME NEW “TALENT”
Officially Rob Stutzman is now part of a group of people helping Meg Whitman assess whether she will seek the Gubernatorial bid. But you can be sure that as soon as Whitman makes her big announcement (sources say that may be as early as next week), she’ll be formally rolling out the leadership team for her campaign, and look for Rob Stutzman to be front and center. I have known Rob for many, many years (if you go back far enough, he voted for me when I was elected President of the California Republican Assembly back in 1995, when he was President of CRA’s Sacramento Unit). Rob, currently with Navigators, has a storied career as a top notch communications professional (see his resume here).

Here we go again…..line up the RINOS….Campbell, Whitman are unsupportable…no dollars for them…Poizner looks like the energy bunny…it is time to put him out on the RINO rubber chicken circuit to see if he sells well.

Thanks for the round-up Jon. Of all the people mentioned the one, in my opinion, who will loose the most to the Democrat is Peter Foy. The Republican party never seems to learn that California is not a far right win state. We are a moderate state on the “social issues.” I know you and your friends on the far right wing nut fringe don’t believe it. But if this state is going to survive the prospect of a second coming of Jerry Brown, please don’t lend your support to a far right wing candidate.

Gentlemen:
The good folks at “Rasmussen Reports” released a poll over the weekend
testing the 2010 California Governor’s race. They matched Meg Whitman
vs. 3 potential Democrat nominees. The results are very Good News for
the Calfornia GOP:
……..Meg Whitman……….38 %
……..Jerry Brown…………..40 %
……..Meg Whitman………..37
……..Gavin Newsome………34
……..Meg Whitman………..41
……..A. Villaraigosa………..34
Rasmussen only tested Ms. Whitman, but presumably Insurance Commiss-
ioner Steve Poizner would make a comparable showing. [Note: I don’t have
a Client in this race, so I have no axe to grind].
* Rasmussen surveyed 500 Likely voters around the state by Telephone
on January 14, 2009 and published results over the weekend.
(1) IMHO, this means that many of the voters who gave Obama a statewide
landslide just 2 months ago are ready to switch to a plausible Republican
candidate for Governor in 2010.
(2) California voters GET IT that they have a permanent Demo legislature
controlled by public employee unions, and they GET IT they need a GOP
governor to prevent further excesses by that legislature.
(3) If Mr. Poizner, Ms. Whitman or other candidates still to emerge can
make a Credible case for Governor, the GOP should hold the Corner Office
in 2010, and may well carry in some Constitutional Offices as well.
(4) If I sound too optimisic, please consider these facts. Jerry Brown has
won 4 Statewide races dating to 1974, and has been in the public eye for
nearly 4 decades. Ms. Whitman has become a public figure in just the
past year…. and yet she is now in a Statistical Tie with Moonbeam 3.0 !
That is remarkable.
