The Supervisor who would be King, or Congressman, or Secretary of State, or President, or…

Sac County Supervisor Roger Dickenson (sic) announced this week (via a news release), that he will introduce a resolution calling for a withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

Wow – I didn’t even know that Sac County had a Foreign Policy office…or expertise…or jurisdiction…

Regardless of how you feel about the war, Dickenson’s (sic) move smacks of little more that political grandstanding – another search for headlines.  Perhaps after getting spanked at the polls so many times running for "higher" office, he’s trying to reinvent himself for yet another run.

Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan – who has become the articulate voice for conservative issues on the BOS – called the move for what it was – inappropriate.  While I might have used a more color metaphor, MacGlashan, being more civil and polite than I, hit just the right note.

(photo of Supervisor MacGlashan and her Husband, Craig – County GOP Chair from the Sacramento Bee story calling them "one of Sacramento’s top conservative power couples.")

Here’s the statement made by MacGlashan in opposition to the Resolution:

“This and many other international issues are important, but the County of Sacramento does not make foreign policy, we don’t employ foreign policy experts and we are not elected to make foreign policy decisions.

The public already has a voice on this issue, that’s why we have Members of Congress, and I believe that Reps. Matsui, Lungren, Doolittle and Tauscher have heard from their constituents on this matter.

I doubt whatever action the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors takes on foreign policy issues will have much impact on the positions that they, the U.S. Congress or the President take on this or other foreign policy matters.

It is inappropriate for the Board to be spending County time and taxpayer dollars on symbolic political gestures, when we are facing many issues for which we can and should be finding solutions.”

Dickenson (sic) is sure to howl – saying that the issue deserves debate.  Funny that when MacGlashan proposed ending funding of optional, special healthcare for illegal immigrants, Dickenson (sic) led efforts to kill it without even a separate debate…
