Just in case the "holiday season" has left you out of sync with that which is shortly to come, the California Presidential Primary is a mere 33 days away. OK, you knew the date, but admit it … you hadn’t thought of it in terms of "shopping days left."
With Iowa on a tad nearer horizon, the SD media is looking to localize the story as much as possible. I loved this headline and editorial from the New Year’s Day SDUT:
The Iowa circus: This is no way to choose party nominees
No way, perhaps, but politics is often a circus. Have some popcorn and hang on.
Speaking of hanging on, the SDUT this morning focuses on Duncan Hunter’s chances:
As reporter Dana Wilkie notes in the piece, Duncan does have the ability to state the obvious when he says, "The only thing that stands between us and high numbers in the polls right now are media coverage and money."
From the "Weight and See" Department, the SDUT’s Chris Reed at America’s Finest Blog notes some questions raised over Mike Huckabee’s healthy lifestyle. The resulting comments (well, one anyway) are a hoot:
A cheap shot on Huckabee or the beginning of the end of his campaign? You be the judge
Lastly, from the "We’re Not in Iowa, but We’re Serious" Department, comes this blurb courtesy of the San Diego Metropolitan’s Daily Business Report:
Nowhere close to Iowa, a clutch of shirt-sleeved, sign-bearing supporters of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul incongruously gathered the night of New Year’s Eve at and on the corners around Horton Plaza. "Join the Ron Paul Revolution," said one repeatedly through his megaphone at passing New Year’s revelers in various states of drink. The 1988 Libertarian Party candidate for president — now a Texas Congressman — is polling under 1 percent in his bid for the GOP nod; that’s even less than fellow Rep. Duncan Hunter of Alpine. Only Ron Paul’s presidential campaign decided that stumping for votes Downtown on New Year’s Eve would be a capital idea.
