Dear Democrat Legislators (well, actually just to those of you who prudently have not yet written a big fat check to Fabian "Louis Vuitton" Nunez for his ill-fated Term-Limits weakening initiative):
You have to give Fabian Nunez the "chutzpah" award for having the gall to push all of you guys around, trying to get you each to pony up $50,000 to help support his brazen effort to remain Speaker through 2012.
Now I know that many of you are facing term-limits, and would like to see Proposition 93 pass — but it just isn’t going to happen. Speaker Nunez knew all along that it would be a challenge to pass the measure.
That said, even with the treacherous and misleading Title and Summary written up by your fellow Democrat, Attorney General Jerry Brown, that misleads readers into thinking this measure imposed stricter term-limits, when it actually would result in you and your colleagues spending more time in office — a survey released today by the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State shows that support for Proposition 93 is DROPPING.
Understand that this is without any major campaign yet being waged against the measure.
The survey says that currently only 51% of voters support the measure, and that is with nearly half saying they aren’t familiar with it. Look for the opposition to the measure to grow as awareness increases of how the initiative allows dozens of you and your colleagues to spend more time in Sacramento. Back in June, a survey from the same Institute on Prop. 93 showed 56% support. So a FIVE PERCENT DROP without any "NO" campaign being waged. (See the survey results here.)
They point out that most of the support for the iniative right now is coming from Republican voters. Well, last month the California Republican Party came out in strong opposition to the plan. So imagine the impact on Republicans when they find out that the measure does the opposite of what they think, and that their party is opposed…
So, when Speaker Nunez starts to call around to close the deal on your $50k, tell him to reallocate some of his own campaign cash from the "luxuries" catagory to actual campaign spending.
You should keep your money, and figure out what you want to run for next — because whether it is next year, 2010, or 2012, you WILL be termed out of your current office.
