A good question from Senator McClintock

Over at his Citizens for the California Republican website, State Senator Tom McClintock has posted an outstanding column with a little bit of "budget terminology 101" an some ominous numbers foreshadowing challenges ahead.

My eyes were drawn to the last part of what he wrote, and I am reprinting it below:

"Gov. Schwarzenegger toured a day care home in Santa Maria yesterday to decry the hardship caused by the budget delay and to call upon Republican senators to adopt his spending plan.  What he forgot to mention is that the Senate cannot even discuss the budget because it has been on summer holiday (over Republican objections) since August 1st.  The governor also forgot to mention that Republican senators tried to get a continuing appropriation so all the state’s bills could be paid during the impasse to avoid any hardship in the first place.  And his comments raise an interesting question: If he is as concerned about the budget impasse as he says, why hasn’t he used his authority as governor to order the Legislature to return to Sacramento to resolve that impasse?"

Good question.

Here’s the answer: Assembly Democrats, Republicans, the Governor, and Senate Democrats have talked to you, Senator McClintock, until they’ve been blue in the face.

Once you figure out what it is you want and stop moving the goalposts, then there will be a compromise.

The fact is that you’ve never voted for a budget in your legislative career. What’s there to talk about?!

Steven: Back off! You are missing the point from Senator Mc Clintock!

There was an emergency funding offered by the Senate GOP, but it was slammed down by Perata!

Governor is tooting the wrong horn by going to a day care center in Santa Maria with Senator Maldonado.

The Governor has the authority clearly stated in the state constitution: Special Session.

Didn’t he exercise that authority after he got sworn in on or a bit after November 17, 2003 on the issue of state finances?

The Democrats in the Assembly under estimated the Republicans assuming that we would roll over and play dead.

The answer is: The Governor is now a stooge for the Democrats so anything less than a bloated budget is unacceptable.
