Are you a Republican candidate running for President of the United States?
If so, have I got an offer for you!
I would like to offer my services as a delegate or alternate delegate for your candidacy at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis next Summer.
There’s only one catch — I cannot endorse you, nor work towards your winning the GOP nomination.
Believe it or not, that is the only ‘pitch’ available to myself and the other elected officers of the California Republican Party!
As the Vice Chairman, South, for the CRP, our bylaws prohibit my endorsing or helping a candidate in a contested Republican primary.
A few of my colleagues don’t have to worry about this — the Chairman along with our National Committeemembers are automatic delegates for the RNC Convention. The rest of us are not so lucky.
If you would like to submit the names of some or all of the State GOP Officers as delegates, speaking on behalf of my colleagues (without asking for permission), I am sure they would be pleased to serve.
(For those new to the process here in the Golden State, each candidate for President has to submit a format list of proposed delegates and alternate delegates to the Secretary of State’s office, for the hand full of statewide at-large positions, and three delegates/alternates per Congressional District. Whomever wins the statewide vote gets all of the at-large delegates, and the local Congressional District delegates (all 3 in each district) go to whichever candidate gets a plurality of the vote in that particular district).
If you drop me a line, I am happy to furnish you with a list of CRP Board Members. I certainly would be pleased to provide my registered address here in Congressional District 48 in Orange County!
Not that I want you to feel sorry for me and my fellow board members, but it seems pretty lame that the structure is set up in such a way that we can only be included out of the kindness of a candidate’s heart, and the promise that, if they are nominated, we will be leaders in their California effort to get to the White House.
In closing, I want to reemphasize that none of my fellow CRP Board Members even know I am writing this. And I am not sure whether any or all of them are interested, like me, in going to the convention.
