I’m pressed for time this morning.
So here are a few quick thoughts reflecting on some of the news today:
1) I wonder what the District Attorney up in Wine Country will do with the hot-potato thrown his or her way by the California Highway Patrol — their recommendation to file reckless driving charges stemming from her recent collision. There is a silver lining for Migden, however. San Francisco seems to like pro-criminal Democrats in office — so being charged with a crime may help her secure more support in her re-election, where she is facing the VERY pro-criminal Mark Leno.
2) Yesterday our Governor sent a letter to the President and Senate Leadership where he applauded their efforts on immigration reform, and then went on to register a complaint about some tertiary component of the plan. The opportunity missed in his letter, of course, was objecting to the granting of legal status (amnesty) to what is estimated to be over twelve MILLION criminal aliens. Talk about being so focused on the trees that you miss the forest… Sigh.
3) Yesterday Assembly Republican Leader Mike Villines, along with FR’s own Dan Schnur and former Democrat Assemblyman Fred Keeley stood tall for real redistricting reform. So far, the only measure out there, belonging to Senator Roy Ashburn, is missing key components. The Villines proposal includes a randomly selected and truly independent commission as well as nested Assembly and Senate Districts, and it includes the Congressional Districts in it. Senator Ashburn should take this opportunity to hold a presser with Villines, withdraw his bill, and get behind Villines’ ACA 4.
4) Senate Bill 850, authored by Republican State Senator Abel Maldonado, was (to use his words) "hijacked" yesterday by liberal Democrats. The legislation would allow the parents of a still-born child to receive a "certificate of still-birth" as opposed to a death certificate. As far as I am concerned, anything this simple that will give any comfort to the family in a tragic situation such as this is a good idea… But somehow someone came up with the ‘bright idea’ that somehow providing a certificate of birth for a still born child would erode coveted abortion rights, and so the Democrats placed a ‘hostile amendment’ (a change that is not supporter by the author) to put a reaffirmation of California being a pro-abortion state into the bill! Needless to say, no principled person can now vote for this legislation, which now has implications far being consoling a family in a challenging time. Senator Maldonado, we’re reminded of a sarcastic saying, "No good deed goes unpunished."
