Today’s feature column is an important piece on why Californian’s should vote No on Proposition 82, liberal Hollywood producer/actor Rob Reiner’s latest attempt to create government bureaucracy. This is the measure that would increase state taxes and take the funds and create a government-run preschool system. Zaremberg makes some great points about how Prop. 82 simply is poor public policy.
NON-PROFIT RATES PROFITABLE FOR LACY
I also took the opportunity to feature and interesting story in today’s Sacramento Bee. The article focuses on my good friend Jim Lacy, who is a prominent political law attorney in Orange County. Well, to be more accurate, the article focuses on how some people are upset that Lacy helps non-profit groups put out informational mailings that contain information on political candidates – for like 40% off the going rate for postage! How does this work? Well, read the article. I found it fascinating.
GOVERNMENT ISN’T SUPPOSED TO PROTECT YOU FROM…YOU!
Today’s ‘Golden Pen’ featured article is by one of our often-featured winners, economist Walter Williams. Williams pens a piece, "Click it or ticket" in which he takes to task a mandatory seat belt law signed into law in his home state of Virginia. We have a similar law already on the books here in California. Williams uses the signing of this law to, as only he can, crystallize the idea that government was not established to ‘protect’ us from ourselves. It’s worth a read.
MAZE DENIES LARKIN ENDORSEMENT
In the 37th Assembly District, upstart liberal GOPer Bob Larkin, who is famous for advocating a Republican tent that is so large that it has room for every Donkey in town, is taking on incumbent conservative Republican Assemblywoman Audra Strickland. I’ve really not written much on this primary as I don’t really see Larkin as a viable candidate. But I will mention two things. First, I note from e-mails I get from the Larkin campaign, as well as a mention in an article today (this race is profiled in both the Ventura County Star as well as the LA Times — both on the main page) that Larkin says he opposes ‘amnesty’ but supports a ‘guest worker’ program. H-E-L-L-O??? A guest worker program IS amnesty! The crime committed here is illegal entry into the United States. A ‘guest worker’ program for those here illegally is granting them amnesty for their crime. Secondly, I found it odd that conservative Republican Assemblyman Bill Maze had endorsed Larkin. This endorsement was touted in a press release as well as is featured on Larkin’s website. So I spoke with Maze late last week on the phone. While it would be safe to say that Maze is no Strickland fan, MAZE SAID THAT HE HAS NOT ENDORSED LARKIN. So something is amiss here. I suspect in a week, Larkin will be a footnote.
Have a great day!
