Earlier this morning, the Orange County Republican Party hosted a small reception honoring Congressman John Doolittle in the spacious office of County GOP Chairman Scott Baugh in Irvine. Congressman Doolittle and his wife, Julie, were given a hearty welcome from Orange Countians. The caliber of some of the attendees is apparent in this photo (from left to right: Scott Baugh, Julie Doolittle, Congressman John Doolittle, California Republican Party Treasurer Keith Carlson, Young Republican Federation of California President Matthew Harper, and FR’s own Orange County Correspondent Adam Probolsky).
Doolittle was introduced by Chairman Baugh (Doolittle is pictured below speaking, with Baugh in the background) and yours truly. The Congressman spoke for about fifteen minutes and then took Q&A. It was a treat to hear him speak — this is one fine, conservative representative. He spoke a lot about the original intentions of our Founding Fathers and the framework of our constitution and about the accomplishments of the Republican Congress (he spent quite a bit of time talking about how the House has passed, over and over, an end to the Death Tax, with has languished in the United States Senate).
Doolittle talked about how this year, he is under an relentless barrage by the media (he equated it out to an equivalent of over a million dollars being spent against his re-election). He said that he enjoys debates over issues and ideas (he wishes someone would take him on for being against illegal immigration) — but these are attacks on baseless ethical charges.
We all lamented the draconian and unfair McCain-Feingold campaingn laws that let the ‘unbaised’ press trash politicians with unlimited resources while the candidates remain hamstrung in their own fundraising by rules that ill-serve the country.
In the end, I think that everyone at the event had the same feeling that I did – gee, I wish this could be my Congressman — he’s great! (Well, my Congressman – John Campbell – is great, too). Ken Campbell, Aaron Park and all of my other Placer County friends are lucky to have John Doolittle as their U.S. Representative.
