Speaker Hastert Applauds Selection for Education and the Workforce Committee Chair
-Rep. McKeon (R-CA) named Chairman of the Education and the Workforce Committee-
(Washington, D.C.) Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) today issued the following statement regarding the Steering Committee’s choice of Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-CA) as the Chairman for the Education and the Workforce Committee:
“The Steering Committee has made a terrific choice in Buck McKeon to take up the gavel for the Education and Workforce Committee. I look forward to having the full House GOP Conference confirm his chairmanship quickly.
“Buck has the background needed for the committee. He knows the issues, he has shown a real capacity for hearing all sides of an argument and he finds solutions to the challenges that the committee faces. He is a strong and effective leader that will continue to move the committee in a positive direction for the American people.”

Two great places for McKeon to start:
1) Dismantle the federal Department of Education.
2) Terminate the “No Child Left Behind” federal program.
Education should be a local issue, reserved to the people, and to the states. There is too much of a tendency, because education is an important issue to voters, to want to develop federal programs on this issue. Some issues, while important, can only be made worse through federal mandates.
Congrats Buck!

Wow! If my math is correct, California now has six committee chairmanships in the House of Representatives.
Very, very impressive.
Now, if we could only find someone to run for the US Senate.

Excellent point, Jon. While we’re at it, we could do away with the state and county departments of education as well…they are about as helpful as a whole in your boat. Frankly, the whole system needs to be blown up…you know with those other boxes the Gov. used to talk about.
