If you didn’t see yesterday’s Union-Tribune front page story on the "other" Inzunza, it’s a must, a blockbuster when it comes to the ramifications it will likely have on next year’s 79th Assembly District race.
Nick Inzunza, mayor of National City and brother of resigned SD City Councilman Ralph Inzunza of stripper-gate fame, just had the county’s "newspaper of record" hand him his political future in a dead bouquet of black roses, kinda like those growing in front of one of his rentals.
The 79th seat, currently held by Juan Vargas, has one of the highest Democratic registrations in the state … it’s considered a cakewalk in November for the D winning the primary … unless the Republican nominee gets to run against a slum lord.
Before yesterday, Mayor Inzunza was considered the Democratic front-runner for the seat. Some may say the U-T isn’t doing the future Republican nominee any favors by ensuring now that Inzunza isn’t in play. But, of course, that’s not a newspaper’s job. I think I read once that the job is to report the truth.
Well, the truth this clearly is. Complete with a side on Inzunza’s properties and another called "Behind the story," its the kind of investigative journalism usually lacking in major metropolitan newspapers. And, even the U-T would have to admit the resources and effort spent on this wouldn’t have come to fruition, at least at the present time, if Nick’s last name were something other than Inzunza.
The financial fiasco at San Diego City Hall, apparently, is far reaching, even now into neighboring cities. Especially if you’re related to the defrocked.
The other leading Democratic contender in the 79th, former Chula Vista Councilmember Mary Salas, must have a smile on her face today. It remains to be seen whether Republican Petra Barajas has yet to find any humor is what she may have hoped to use against Nick Inzunza in a November ’06 general election.
