GOV: Pick a conservative for the high court! – Duke, Bonds, Tookie.

ARNOLD’S PICK FOR THE HIGH COURT
The single most important decision facing Governor Schwarzenegger between now and the end of the year will be whom he choses to fill the vacancy on the California Supreme Court.  Justice Janice Rogers-Brown, whom Schwarzenegger would be replacing, has been a well regarded judge with a reputation for being conservative.  Ken Masugi, of the esteemed conservative think-tank, The Claremont Institute, penned an exclusive column for the FlashReport where he talks about what he thinks the Governor should be looking for in an appointee to California’s highest court.  Don’t miss that exclusive column here.

BAD NEWS BONDS
Yesterday in the FlashReport, Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association penned an exlcusive piece on the dangers of persuing a massive general obligation bond for intrastructure improvements.  If you missed that column, read it here.

DUKE SCANDAL
What should reaction be to the news about Congressman Cunningham pleading guilty to bribery, tax evasion and more?  I have heard from a lot of people, and the reactions have been a mix of anger, pity, sorrow and, I’m happy to say, optimism for those who want to move forward.  I ‘vented’ my reaction to this news about Duke yesterday on the FR blog – you can read that here.

On the main page today, we have what is probably the most comprehensive compellation of today’s news coverage of the event.  Starting with all of the local news in the San Diego Union Tribune and North San Diego County Times — then some commentary from myself, FR Blogger Adam Probolsky, and the Bee’s Dan Weintraub — finally all of the rest of the coverage from AP, Inside the Beltway, and more.

TOOKIE AND CLEMENCY
There have been a lot of stories lately on Tookie Wilson and whether this found of the gang, The Cripps, who committed brutal murders, should have his death penalty sentance commuted because of ‘exemplary’ post-murder behavior while in prison (Wilson has apparently ‘turned a new leaf’ writing childrens books (seriously) and counseling against gang involvement.  Here you can see what FR Bloggers Dan Schnur and Phil Paule have to say on the matter.  Today on the main page, in the featured Golden Pen section, are two ‘must read’ columns if you are following this issue…especially if you have any feeling that "Tookie" should not be put to death for his crimes.

Have a great day.

Jon

Coming tomorrow…a prominent GOP legislator shares his views on where we should go with the loss of Proposition 76, the "Live Within Our Means" Act – and also counsels against massive borrowing…
