San Francisco’s metrosexual mayor, Gavin Newsom, traveled to Iowa this weekend to headline at a fundraiser for Democrat state legislators. Newsom, who made national headlines when he allowed gay couples to legally marry in San Francisco, helped the Hawkeye Dems raise $50K over the weekend. Newson’s on-again-off-again wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom, was not along for the trip.
Although they have filed for divorce, the two continue to be seen together in public. Guilfoyle Newsom was at his side last week when the mayor hosted Prince Charles and his wife, Camille, at a number of events in San Francisco. They filed for divorce earlier in the year, which came as not surprise after Guilfoyle Newsom gave a damaging speech at a large gay rights event at which she talked in detail about her husband’s physical attributes (and more…). The minute that story surfaced, I knew that San Francisco’s pretty-boy mayor with higher aspirations would be rethinking his glamour wife’s ability to help him rise to political stardom at the state or national level. The speech was in October 2004—by January, they had filed for divorce.
These days, the SF Chronicle media is full of stories about whether the power couple is on or off. There is no reason for Newsom to be venturing to Iowa to help Hawkeye Dems raise money, unless he’s starting to think about his next political step. But Newsom’s gay-marriage stunt will limit his ability to win statewide or national office. Like Willie Brown and John Burton, he’ll likely be elected to the state legislature to represent the Bay Area’s liberal views in Sacramento, but will not go any further. Especially if his quasi-wife opens her mouth again.
